Snow!
I heard a rumour (okay, so it was actually the lady on the weather channel) that snow was expected in downtown Vancouver late this week, so Thursday night I was on “snow watch”. “Snow watch” entailed me lying all warm and snug in bed, playing with my phone to stay awake, with the blinds open so I could look outside and see if it was snowing.
Sophisticated plan, I know.
An hour into it and, apart from light rain, there was no sign of any snow. I was just about to give up and go to sleep when I heard shouts and cheers from the street faaaar below. I looked outside and saw…. SNOW!
Lots and lots and lots of snow!
I felt like a kid, gazing out the window at the huge snowflakes drifting down from the sky. I believe it’s called a flurry (which now makes the whole “McFlurry” thing make sense) because it’s a light snowfall that melts away quickly. It began to snow harder and I knew I wanted to try to get a photo. I wasn’t sure how long it would last, so I got out of my lovely warm bed, grabbed my camera and went out onto the balcony.
Barefoot.
In shorts and a singlet.
Yeah, it was cooooold.
I snapped away, trying to get some good shots, but they all turned out like it was white rain. Snow is really hard to photograph when it’s not all over the ground! I took a short video and couldn’t help but giggle when I reviewed it later because my poor freezing hands were shaking so hard, it was making the camera jiggle.
Anyway, I stood out on the balcony for a while, taking photos and enjoying the snowfall. I wasn’t the only one – camera flashes went off randomly from the buildings around me as people took their own photos. I watched as the traffic down below started leaving tracks in the light layer of snow, but within a few minutes it had melted away, as if it had never been there at all. I think that’s what added to the magical feel – the snow was so light and so random that it felt like if I blinked, I’d miss it!
The snow only lasted about ten minutes but it was absolutely beautiful and I’m so glad I stayed awake for it! Just imagine if I’d fallen asleep and missed it all! I’m hoping for more snow tonight, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. They’ve predicted it all through the weekend though, so there’s plenty of time for it to happen again!
Fingers crossed for some more snow tonight!

Edit at 11:10pm – We have snow!!

BL goes catatonic at the mention of snow! She is afraid to drive in it. And we get some now and then too! Just keep extra pizza dough and etc on hand!
You remind me of a little kid wating and waiting for the first snow!!!
Pretty special, eh?

I grew up with snow my whole life, but my wife (also from AU) had a similar reaction when she first moved here ~8 years ago. Her “thing” was she just HAD to try and make a snow-man.
Unfortunately, in real life snow is not always the best consistency for making snowmen (or snowballs), unlike how it is portrayed in the movies (where it is always perfect and sticks together with no effort).
I hope you can stay excited about snow through the whole winter, because for a lot of people it gets old real fast! (Not me though. I love snow and always will!)

Rabbits’ Guy – You just wait until it’s all icy, I’m going to be terrified to walk anywhere – I can’t even imagine trying to drive in the snow, so I’m with BL – that’s scary! Snow is awesome when you’re not trying to negotiate traffic!
Keithius – I can relate to the snowman – Phill and I made one in Japan and while there was heaps of snow around, our snowman turned out like a white hershey’s kiss! Just a glob of snow randomly shaped into a triangle. Turns out snowmen are hard to build! I can imagine I’d get over the snow after a while, but hopefully not yet – I’m enjoying it too much!
