I Love Autumn… I Mean, “Fall”!

Coming from a country where the seasons aren’t really that well defined, being able to physically see the difference in the trees and feel the difference in the temperature as the weather turns is just amazing. I’ve been looking out my window for the past two weeks at the rows of trees lining the street. One side is green and the other is orange. This fascinated me because I wondered why they were turning at such different rates. I finally went to take a photo this morning… and actually gasped out loud. The trees that were once luscious and leafy, were much more bare, their leaves lying in matted piles on the footpath, yet strangely, the trees on the left remained green.

I raced downstairs to take some photos of the leaves. I know I looked like a crazy person, snapping photos of what was basically the footpath, but hey – I’ve never seen leaves like this and I was excited. Even Phill is excited too – when we walk through the leaves, he can’t help but kick them about. Only when we’re not around other people, of course.

I loved the leaves carelessly scattered on the parked cars, but Phill suggested the owners might not like it that much. I pointed out it’s probably not as annoying as snow all over your car, but I guess once the novelty of fallen leaves wears off, I’d probably be frustrated with the leaves as much as the next person. I’m not sure when that will happen, because every time I see the beautiful orange leaves scattering the footpaths, I squeee a little inside.

Isn’t that just beautiful? I know it’s just dead leaves, but still, I think it’s so pretty. Even when they get stuck to my heels and trekked into the stores and get all slippery in the rain… I still love them.

What’s your favourite season?

Fall is my favorite season, not coincidentally since that’s when my birthday is.

I never get tired of the changing of the seasons, and the variety that comes with it – especially over here in New England.

And don’t feel bad about loving what is essentially just dead leaves – I’ve lived here 31 (almost 32) years and I still smile when I see the colors in the leaves really start to change.

Playing in the dead leaves? You some kind of nutty little kid? (We ALL do it! – I think everybody likes it.)

New England is THE place for Fall though – for sure. We just don’t have so many types of trees that get colorful leaves.

Wow that is so pretty! I have never seen anything like it either.

I would love to pick them up and let them rain on me – that would be a little magical!

I’m still not quite used to calling it “fall” either although with all the leaves falling off the trees I suppose it does make sense! Summer is definitely my favourite season – I think because it’s so short lived here in MB, and the rest of the year is so brutally cold that I just cherish a month or two of warm weather!

Keithius – It’s good to know that the excitement dead leaves brings doesn’t have to disappear as I get used to them. I’ll always want to put them in a pile, then run and dive into it! :)

Rabbits’ Guy – Maybe I will have to take a trip to New England and see the beautiful leaves for myself!

Chantel – I tried picking them up, but then it was all wet and dirty. I think I need to do that on a dry day, so the leaves aren’t so gross. :P

Emily Jane – I think I missed summer well and truly. We got here and it rained non-stop for a week or so, and then it’s been raining on and off, and miserable for the rest of the time. BUT I love that, so I’m happy! I guess it will make me appreciate the sun a lot more when it does come out!
