Apparently Cars Bounce off Cement Columns

Yesterday my friend K and I were in an undercover car park putting her daughter into her pram, when we heard a loud BANG. I looked up in time to see a small white car bounce off a large cement column. My eyes shifted to the driver, who turned to stare over her shoulder towards the boot. A shocked expression appeared on her face as she realised what she’d just done. She moved the car forward an inch, got out, walked around to the boot, inspected the damage and climbed back into the car. Rather jerkily, she drove forward – through a vacant spot – and parked in a second vacant spot. She got out of the car and stalked off, obviously stressed.

Dude.

Why try to reverse into a vacant parking spot next to a cement column when there are two vacant spots right ahead of you? I don’t understand. If you want the opportunity to practice your reverse parking, do it away from cement columns, poles or other cars. If this was just a mistake … it’s a bad one. She backed into the column really fast, so fast that she bounced off it after impact. I wonder if she had even been looking over her shoulder – it’s a bit hard to miss the size of the column.

It made me wonder how many people have single-car accidents in carparks involving poles, posts, columns or guard rails. While I haven’t had an accident in a car park, I have had one a while back involving another (at fault) car and I must say, I would much prefer to back into a column than collide with another car. At least there’s less chance of injury or damages claims – after all, the cement column isn’t going to sue you.

So how about you? Have you had a carpark accident?

    I have!

I was seventeen and drove a teeny tiny little SMALL red car. It was a very small car. Tiny even.

Then one day My sister and I drove with my dad’s brand new van, which was large, at least twice as long as my little car, and prolly my car plus half wider.

we went to the mall and I was searching for a spot to park. I tried to round a corner to go to the next isle to keep looking for a spot and all I heard was CRUNCH!

I took the corner too narrow and smacked the passenger side of the van into a cement pillar!

AND. I couldn’t figure out how to move the van away from the cement pillar. I tried reversing and crunch!crunch!crunch. I tried going forward and CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH!

    It was horrible.

    My dad was very upset!

  2. I haven’t yet! But that’s probably because I’ve never had a full license hehe. I’d imagine that I will have a few. But as for parking I always try to find the path of least resistence :P

bluepaintred – Oh oh, I can imagine your Dad wasn’t impressed! As if the initial bang wasn’t bad enough, you’ve got to figure out how to get away without causing more damage – that must have been a bit stressful!

Lorraine – I go for the easy park too – a nice wide parking space, preferably away from other cars, nose in, away from any poles or shopping trolleys. :)

I’ve never backed into a cement column, but I did rip my driver’s door mirror off the car when pulling out of our garage. My husband drove a big, fat Dodge Ram at the time and he took up so much room that I over-compensated when in reverse. It sucked. I was so mad!

Bae – It was a bit scary. Any time you crash a car, it’s gotta freak you out!

Dana – That would definitely suck! I’ve often worried about side-swiping my car because Phill’s is so much bigger than mine – I get stressed that we won’t both fit in the garage!
