Wedding (Cup)Cakes
It’s hard to believe, but in a space of only two years, Phill and I will have attended four weddings together. Is there something in the water? Two weddings have already taken place and the other two are in October and November, which gives me plenty of time to find new dresses. That’s the only “problem” with attending friends’ weddings – many of the same people will be at both weddings which means me wearing the same dress is not going to be an option. The boys are lucky – all they have to do is change the colour of their ties and they’re set!
I don’t mind though – I love weddings! I especially love how different they can be from couple to couple. Our friends S and C’s wedding was a beach wedding in March, where guests stood for the ceremony in the lovely warm sun and the bride and groom poured black and white sand into a vase to commemorate their union. There were photos taken on the beach in the sunset, followed by a cocktail reception in the surf club. The other wedding we attended, my sister’s, was a Catholic mass in a beautiful chapel, followed by a cocktail reception at a mountain lookout.
While they were very different, there was one thing the same – the wedding cakes.
Or should I say, wedding cupcakes.

Both weddings had cupcakes instead of a wedding cake, which I thought was pretty awesome. How easy to just help yourself to a cupcake? There’s no need for cutlery or plates, although you are left with the cupcake wrappers. One of the weddings had a small cake decorated the same as the cupcakes so the bride and groom could still “cut” something together, which I thought was a nice touch. It also meant they had something to save in their freezer for their 1st wedding anniversary, if they wanted to.

I’m torn – I really like the idea of a traditional wedding cake, but I also like the practicality and cuteness of wedding cupcakes. I think for my wedding, I would go with the cupcakes with the small cake to cut and save. No, I’m not engaged, but a girl can plan, right? Especially if it’s planning CAKE!
What about you? What do you think of wedding cupcakes versus the traditional wedding cake? And the BIG question – what flavour?

The flavor is easy – chocolate! Though I conceded that some people do have allergies.
I found myself attending lots of weddings in a short time period as well, 2005-2007. I guess it is having friends who get married at about the same age, or maybe it’s just coincidence.

have both cupcakes AND a traditional cake–why not?!

CatSynth – I agree with chocolate! I think it’s friends getting married around the same age – but they are a little older than us, so we don’t feel like we’re being left behind!
Terri – I like that idea! I have a love of all things cake so it really could end up that way. I guess it will depend on the budget…
I love weddings too! As for cupcakes versus a traditional cake I went for a traditional, large cake but I definitely see the appeal of cupcakes. There’s none of that cakeage fee nonsense that many places like to sneak in plus everyone seems to love one!

CARROTS – LOTS OF THEM!

Lorraine – I’ve heard horror stories about places sneaking in charges for weddings – I wonder if they’ll include a cupcake charge per cupcake? That might add up!
Rabbits’ Guy – I like your thinking! Chocolate, yum!
The Bunns – Carrots? Wait a minute…I’m not sure how that would go down with the guests!
Back to the scallops. REAL scallops do come from a shell. It’s just that what are sold as scallops sometimes are not really scallops, but “plugs” cut from tough parts of fish to look like scallops.

Rabbits’ Guy – Oh right, I get it now. That’s a bit dodgy if they’re not selling “real” scallops, but serve them as scallops. I’m *pretty* sure ours were real!
I love the cupcake idea, with a sweet little cake for later!! As a cat, I would like tuna cupcakes please.

Kitikata – Tuna cupcakes sounds fabulous. Maybe when I get married I will have to make sure Puddy has her own cupcakes!
