I’ve Created a Monster!

July12

I was shopping the other day and came across the pet mince section. I always see people buying mince and I decided I would get some for Puddy to try. I thought it might be a nice change from the canned food we give her, especially since the mince was kangaroo mince, something apparently very good for animals. The mince is fresh and I understand what the few ingredients in it are, as opposed to the canned food ingredients.

You can either cook it or serve it raw and I must admit, I wasn’t keen on kangaroo meat being in my frypan, so I gave it to Puddy raw. She sniffed it cautiously … then dug in. I swear she didn’t even come up for air!

Kangaroo Mince

The mince package has six single-serve sections that you simply cut off and tear open, which is rather convenient. It is a little hard to tear the top off though, and sometimes I end up with raw mince on my fingers – as a squeamish person, that’s a little icky.

Kangaroo meat is actually a very healthy, lean meat that is low in fat and a good source of protein and some B-group vitamins, not just for animals, but humans too! I must admit I haven’t tried kangaroo meat. It looks a little freaky and I can’t help but feel like I’m eating Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, but then again, I eat other meat so why should kangaroo be any different?

But why did I say I’ve created a monster? Because Puddy loves kangaroo mince so much she whines and whines until she gets some more! She knows it’s dinner time because I call to her around the same time every night and she comes racing over, hoping it’s going to be mince. Mince night is twice a week and as soon as  I pull it out of the fridge, she starts meowing excitedly. Of course, she still gets dry food during the day. I also enjoy getting her the odd chicken neck from the supermarket once every couple weeks for her to chew on – but she’s got to be supervised when eating that because she has a habit of picking it up, walking away and dumping it on the carpet!

What does your cat eat? Tinned food, dry food, raw food?

And has your cat – or have you – tried kangaroo meat before?

Wow, I’ve never heard of this before for pets. It sounds like it might be hard to find, though. I’ll keep my eyes peeled.

We feed our cats wet Friskies and also dry Science Diet. One of our three cats should really only be fed twice a day. She’s overweight. We leave the dry stuff out all day and she’s always at the bowl. Takes after her mother.

I went to Perth on an exchange program for two weeks and we stayed on a farm ran by Aborigines. A few courses at dinner did contain some kangaroo meat and I did like it. It was very lean meat like venison and very tasty barbecued

Went to supermarket just now and saw ostrich and crocodile meat! Might try ostrich but I draw the line at crocodile!!

Cats at home eat a mix of dried and wet food with a can of tuna at weekends. Do you cook the chicken neck at all for Puddy of is it given raw? They serve chicken neck and chicken feet in Chinese restaurants and have never been brave enough to try!

They eat tinned food (stinky) and dry food (horrid) and whatever they drag home (gross)

    Cats are weird.

(Except Puddy of course, who is only a little bit so!)

Kangaroo meat! How wonderful it must be for Puddy. I don’t have any kangaroos where I live. I wonder what it tastes like. I bet it is delicious if Puddy cries for more!

Kathy- I actually hadn’t heard of it for pets either, until I saw people buying it. It’s worth trying out because I’ve come to realise a mixture of different textures is good for pets – keeps them guessing what’s for dinner lol!

Adrina – that would have been an experience! I haven’t tried crocodile or ostrich but I’d be keen! Let me know how it goes if you gather the courage.

The Bunns – Dont worry, Puddy is certainly weird too! She likes dragging in gross stuff too, mostly lizards!

Kitikata-San – It must taste good – maybe I will have to try it too!

Elizabeth – I haven’t tried it but I’ve heard it’s got to be cooked perfectly or it can taste horrible! Oh and.. one week to go! Exciting! :)
