Twilight

Last week some work collegues were gushing over the Twilight series, claiming it was the best thing they’d ever read. I was skeptical to say the least. I’d managed to avoid the whole Twilight fuss since I was concentrating on re-reading the entire Harry Potter series instead. However, while I was shopping a few days ago, I stumbled across the Twilight book on sale, so I picked it up and flicked it open to the first chapter. I always read the first paragraph of a book before I buy it – consider it odd, but if I’m hooked within that paragraph, then I’ll get it.
Anyway, I was standing there having a bit of a read when I noticed someone was hovering around me; an employee. I figured she was going to scold me for “trying before buying”, but when I looked at her, she just gushed, “It’s such a good book. It’s amazing. Oh my God, Edward. He’s so hot. Vampires.”
Uh, what do you say to that? I smiled and backed away a little. “Uh, yeah, I haven’t read it, but I’ve heard it’s good.”
She literally gasped. “Oh, you have to read it! It’s amazing! And it’s on sale! Edward! He’s so hot!”
I nodded, popped the book in my basket and got the hell outta there. I ended up in the pet section. Not sure how I got there, but I scooped up some Temptations and headed to the check-outs (carefully avoiding the book section and crazy Edward-obsessed employee). When I got home, I started to read. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. It’s no Harry Potter, but there is something about it that sucks you in. I’m now onto the third book and I think I’m a Twilight fan. There’s just something about Bella and Edward that’s so appealing … yet also frustrating.
Have you read the Twilight series – what did you think?
Oh, and what about the movie? Love it or hate it?

I think there are these books that we resist because they’re so annoyingly popular. The fans drive us nuts with all their embarrassing gushing. Then we read and we’re hooked too.
I haven’t read the books yet. I did watch the movie though. And my reaction was probably a lot like the girl at your bookstore……
I LOVED the twilight series – the BOOKS. I hate hate HATED the movie. I have never seen such horrible, non convincing dialogue in my LIFE, and let me tell you, My husband LOVES the old old B movies, so I have seen some pretty darn bad movies!
Dina – I think that’s why I initially ignored the fuss (I also did the same thing with the Harry Potter series!). While I didn’t like the movie, I agree that Edward made it bearable… mmmmm
bluepaintred – I’m with you on this – the books are good (so far) and the movie sucked. I wasn’t impressed with Bella in the movie at all – I was so disappointed. Edward was a bit of a hottie though!
I read all 4 books in 10 days, so yeah, I got hooked!
Haven’t seen the movie, but I’ve heard that it’s pretty bad. Eventually I’ll hire it on DVD and see for myself.
Nothing ever beats the book though, no matter how good the movie is! (Or what series it is – the Order of the Pheonix movie made me quite angry… another story!)
I got hooked the series, a couple of my girl High School students insisted I read them. I ripped through the first one in a a day, on the returning the book tot he girls I told them they were very wicked and could I have the next book please. For some reason I haven’t read the last one, just the synopsis and I get the feeling it is just too far fetched and disjointed………..Have not seen the movie and think I don’t want to……
Kelly – All 4 books in 10 days is VERY impressive! I’m a bit behind, but I’m getting there – just finished the third book today.
d. Moll – They are rather addicting, aren’t they? The movie is fine – it’s nothing compared to the books of course, but it’s a nice easy movie to watch. Im not sure what the last book is about, but I’m *just* up to it now, so I guess I will find out. I did hear things get a little weird though!
