This is Why I Do the Cooking

I’m at work, pretending to be busy. Phone rings. It’s Phill.

Phill: Hey, how are you?

Me: Good… What’s up?

Phill: Uh, you know those little tins of tuna in the cupboard?

Me: Yeah?

Phill: Are they human food or cat food?

Me: Uh, human food. Why?

I could hear him hesitating. Immediately my mind raced over the different flavours of tuna I had carefully stacked in the cupboard – tuna with tomato, tuna with chili, tuna with onion … basically tuna with stuff that’s toxic to cats!

Me: OMG, you didn’t give her any, did you?

Phill: No, no, no. I mean, well, yeah, I opened one of the tins but I figured it looked too gourmet for cat food, so I checked the label for a “not fit for human consumption” warning but I couldn’t find one.

Me: Did it have a picture of a cat on it?

Phill: No… but the tins look identical to the cat food tins! Seriously! Why would you make people food tins look like cat food tins?

Me: What did you do with it? You didn’t throw it away, did you?

Phill: No, I wrapped it up in cling wrap and put it in the fridge. I figure you can have it for dinner when you get home from work.

Me: Oh. Thanks.

Phill: I still maintain it looks like cat food.

Me: Right. Okay. Bye.

I will give it to him that they do look similar. Here’s a photo for comparison:

Cat Food or Human Food

Having said that, I must point out one very critical difference: there’s a fluffy white cat and ball of string on the cat food tins. Therefore, we can assume if there isn’t a cute fluffy cat on the tuna tin, then it’s fit for human consumption. Makes sense, right? Because, you know, it would be nice to not have to double-guess if the tin of tuna you’re about to crack open for dinner is for you or for your cat.

As a result of our conversation, any tuna that Phill prepares for me in the future will be very carefully inspected before consumption.

Edit to Add: Nope, I don’t keep cat food in the cupboard – that’s kept in the laundry cupboard. Seems that Phill saw the tins and assumed they were cat food accidentally put in the wrong place.

Okay, similiar, but NOT REALLY!
I could maybe understand if you stacked all the tins next to each other in the cupboard, but I’m assuming that you’d keep Puddy’s stuff away from yours.
Men. Aye.

(PS, I totally love the chunks in springwater. On a sandwich? Delish.)

I’m surprised that they make the packaging look so similar! If the cat food cans were rotated just right, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

If I was in a hurry or just not paying very good attention, and the cans were stored near each other, I can see how a mistake could be made. But I’m also the type of person who would put great distances between where the cat food and people food was stored.

Kelly – Yes, I keep all cat food in the LAUNDRY cupboard, not the food cupboard, but maybe Phill thought I’d just randomly had a “moment” and put them in there, haha. Maybe I do that just to avoid this exact thing! :P

Daisy – I know, right? And some of the flavours of cat food actually sound very nice too! People might think they are for humans.

Kirsten – I agree. I did tell him that I’ve never kept cat food in the cupboard, but he seems to think I may have slipped up. Oh Ye of little faith! :D

That is too hilarious! Those cans do look scarily similar… I would probably eat the wrong one with how my brain is working lately, haha

Frankly I think Phil makes an outstanding point. Maybe even two or three! What idiot thought up those labels.

Hysterical! Really loved reading this. My man (MauiJim) actually needs to ask me where the sugar is. And the salt. And anything else in the kitchen. He could be in the same kitchen for 5 years and still not know where anything is. :-)

Miss Priss – Haha I could imagine! I would hope that you would notice before you start to eat it though!

Rabbits’ Guy – I agree – they are very similar! Maybe there should at least be something in the title that makes it more obvious that it’s cat food.

LunaCafe – I know that feeling. Phill often stands at the fridge and tells me we’re out of cheese, or margarine or something, and I always have to get up and show it to him – and it’s right in front of his eyes! :P

Hahahahaha! May we suggest that they are in fact the same!? The brand is the same, the packaging is the same… they just tear other veggies in the “human can”. Bon appétit! ; )
Purrs, Siena & Chilli

Cat with a Garden: Haha, they could be the same, but I’m not willing to test that theory out! :P

Oh! LOL! I mean, I actually laughed out loud at this post! I mean how funny this is! I can’t take it, real life is funnier than fiction! Meow!

Kitikata-san – I’m glad you thought it was funny – I thought so too, especially when I saw them lined up next to each other, hehe! :D
